FARMERS AND BREWERS CO-OPERATION – CORNWALL & DEVON

Jonathan Arnold spent last week taking in breath taking scenery and first class Maris Otter crops in both Devon and Cornwall. Tim Cox from Devon grows Maris Otter Barley for Otter Brewery and Charlie Watson-Smyth Grows Maris Otter Barley for St. Austell Brewery, both with the support of Simpsons Malt Ltd and Robin Appel Ltd.

Winter Malting Barley Bulletin – Feb 2020

As we slowly recover from the damage wreaked by Storms Dennis & Ciara, soils across the country are at or above field capacity and the prospects of an early spring diminish by the day. Forward forecasts look to herald some drier weather beyond the first week of March, we will believe it when we see it!

FARMERS AND BREWERS CO-OPERATION – SUSSEX

On the 20th June, Nick Matthews, of Robin Appel Ltd, drove across to West Sussex to host a meeting of farmers and brewers anxious to promote the ‘local produce’ label. Edward Tupper started growing Maris Otter barley for us on his farm near Petworth, West Sussex, just 2 years ago, and Miles Jenner, managing director of long established brewers Harvey’s of Lewes, has always said if you can produce my favourite barley variety local to the brewery, then count me in.

Winter Malting Barley Harvest 2021 Review

Having now seen a lot of winter barley, both feed and malting, it is clear that the tricky growing season culminating in a wet, dull June has taken the edge off both quality and yields.
