Grain Haulage
Several years ago Robin Appel began to recognise a fall out of independent hauliers from the grain supply industry. Poor haulage rates, waiting times at mills, and even restricted loading times on farm (8.00am to 4.00pm) were all compounding to destroy any profitability from operating bulk grain haulage. None of the major UK haulage operators were engaged, and a shortfall in capacity beckoned.
The company needed to invest in lorries of its own to ensure its ability to move grain when commanded.
Today, the company runs a small fleet of 44 tonne HGV’s, both bulk and curtainsided trailers, managed by a dedicated staff of forwarders who, everyday, do their level best to smooth out the inevitable uncertainties of logistics planning.
The predicted shortfall in grain transport capacity has indeed manifested itself, inflating haulage rates, and raising an awareness across the industry that everyone’s contribution to mitigating this cost is important. At Robin Appel Ltd we have led an industry wide examination of the problem we face. The solution is in our own hands – we are committed to maintain and build capacity to meet our own expanding demand.
