HGCA Topic Breakfast

HGCA/MAGB Topic Breakfast
18th February 2015, Warminster.

Warminster Maltings Ltd played host to this event for farmers and other levy payers, beginning with a full English breakfast at The Weymouth Arms, and ending with a tour of the maltings.

Presentations from HGCA analysts Brenda Mullan and Helen Plant began the formal proceedings, with a review of the global barley market, followed by the UK perspective.

Robin Appel, executive chairman of Warminster Maltings, presented the MAGB members ‘wish list’ when it came to variety and nitrogen specification. He pointed out the need to store barley on farms at less than 14.5% moisture going forward, a tightening of this specification in the interests of food safety. He then invited farmers to help raise the profile of malt by teaming up with their local brewery for ‘Open Farm Sunday’, a national event that has caught the imagination and interest of a wide swathe of the British public.

Delegates then walked round the corner into Pound Street, where Chris Garratt, Head Maltster, met them and hosted a tour of the malthouses, and an explanation of all the elements that contribute to the great British pint!
