Wheat: Bread Wheat
The UK market value of bread has risen 14% since 2001, reflecting the huge swing by consumers to the premium quality loaf. Wheat growers can cash in on this by growing Group I varieties for their ‘local’ market. But, first they have to match the right variety to the right mill, and then they can choose whether to select one of our fixed premium or min-max premium contracts to secure the enterprise.
HEREWARD is 17 years old, but remains many millers’ favourite bread making wheat, due to its consistently high proteins and specific weights. It has established ‘niche’ markets with an established grower following and is set to continue production for a few more years yet, despite hagberg problems in recent years. As always ensure local demand before planting.
SOLSTICE is the established alternative, delivering high yields, high specific weights, and consistently good quality flour.
GALLANT is new from Syngenta and promises much with improved agronomics, improved yields and NABIM approved milling quality, may replace Solstice as number one GP1 if it performs well in the field and at the mill this harvest.
EINSTEIN and CORDIALLE, the Group 2's are suitable for some mills, but it is important to establish a market before planting.
