Peas

“Farmers are starting to focus again on the worth of field peas in the rotation. The lower carbon footprint of the crop, the organic nitrogen residue, now valued at £75 per hectare, and the EU Protein Supplement set at €55/ha for 2010 and 2011 (equivalent to £10/tonne) all combine to overcome growers prejudice. The current market capacity is for up to 250,000 tonnes, but as agricultural agendas around the world advance from 'food security' to 'food self sufficiency' and a revised interest in pulses as a protein source for livestock emerges, UK growers could benefit from this rejuvenated driver of demand and prices, as they did back in the 1980's.” White Peas primarily for use in animal feed, there is a niche market for human consumption (soups and prepared meals).
