Milling Oats: Winter Oats

The winter crop is the crop, with a limited choice of varieties due to the inevitable restrained investment in plant breeding. But despite this, those varieties we have continue to sustain a profitable performance.

Still the most popular variety is GERALD, now in its 15th year, and the backbone of UK oat production over the last decade. It combines high yield with good standing ability and disease resistance, and also delivers good milling attributes.

DALGUISE still holds its place in the market, although a little weaker on disease resistance (Crown Rust), it is early to combine, and displays slightly superior milling characteristics. MASCANI offers a third choice with the most outstanding ‘untreated’ performance thanks to its strong resistance to mildew and crown rust.
