Progressive Organics: Milling Wheat

"REAL BREAD" is capturing the headlines and could represent the "Get out of jail" card for disenchanted Organic cereal growers.  New incentives call for new varieties.

GALLANT a new winter bread wheat has gone straight into Organic production.  It established well last autumn, and has come through the winter very strongly.  The variety is deemed to perform well in a low input situation and trials indicate a 13% yield lift over Hereward.

AMARETTO spring wheat claims a 14% yield increase over Paragon, has always appeared less prone to ergot infection, and qualitywise rarely fails to impress.  Seed rates of minimum 250 kg/ha, cross drilled at 125 kg/ha each way, exploits an old tried and tested establishment technique.

Recommendations for Harvest 2011:-

Winter - CLAIRE, GALLANT, HEREWARD
Spring - AMARETTO, PARAGON
